Abstract
Home Attachment, which is a specific form of place attachment, focuses on the people’s emotional attachment to their residences. Nowadays, when globalization is threatening the uniqueness of places and weakening people’s attachment to their dwellings, identifying the factors influencing home attachment is even more important. This study aimed to determine the social and physical parameters influencing the level of home attachment. To do that, questionnaires including “home attachment” and “description of the home environment” scales were distributed within the target population (216 residents of Sanandaj) in April 2023. The results showed a moderate correlation between “home attachment” and “description of the home environment” scales. What is more, elder residents were more satisfied with their home environment and were more attached to it. A notable finding was the negative correlation between home attachment and duration of residence. This could be attributed to the factors such as deterioration of the home’s physical environment, the historical need for building renovation in the Iranian culture, or a combination of both. Another negative correlation was found between home attachment and the number of household members, which might be occurred due to reasons such as loss of privacy, reduction in amenities, and dissimilarities of preferences for creating a comfortable space. The results also showed that married couples had a higher home attachment while also described it better. This suggests that family bonds occur prior to home bonds. The results of this study can be used in the design of home environments to strengthen people’s attachment and sense of belonging to it.
