Exploring the Influence of Ritual Occasions on Synomorphic Patterns in the Collective Built Environment; A Case Study of Isfahan’s Armenian Quarter of New Julfa

Background and Objectives: One of the fundamental issues in the design of contemporary urban spaces and built environments is understanding the relationship between spatial form and human behavior. The theory of synomorphy, as a fundamental concept in environmental psychology and behavioral architecture, examines the congruence between the physical structure of the environment, its function, and the behavior of its users. This congruence is achieved when the physical elements of a space align with the prevalent or desirable behavioral patterns of its inhabitants, thereby enhancing quality of life, increasing social interactions, and improving the urban living experience. Given the significance of this issue, the present study focuses on the Jolfa neighborhood in Isfahan, a historic district characterized by a distinct cultural fabric and a prominent presence of ritual events, to examine the impact of such occasions, particularly Christmas celebrations, on the formation or reinforcement of synomorphic patterns within the urban context. Ritual events, as cultural and social stimuli, can lead to changes in user behavior, patterns of spatial use, and the formation of new social relationships. Due to its historical background, the presence of numerous churches, and the celebration of Armenian ritual events, particularly Christmas, Jolfa provides a suitable setting for examining physical–behavioral congruence under ritual conditions. This research seeks to address two core questions: How do behavioral patterns during ritual occasions differ from those on ordinary days? And how can such occasions contribute to the reinforcement of environmental synomorphy?
Methods: The present study employed a qualitative, descriptive–analytical research method with a case study strategy. Data were collected through document review, field observations, ethnographic methods, and systematic photography and videography. Sampling was conducted using both probability and purposive sampling methods over three seven-day periods: the week before Christmas, the week of Christmas celebrations, and the week following Christmas. Observations were conducted daily during three time intervals: morning (9:00–12:00), afternoon (14:00–17:00), and evening (19:00–22:00). The study area included Jolfa Street, Khachatur Square, Jolfa Square, and Vank Cathedral. During these periods, environmental data—including dominant behavioral patterns, population density, modes of interaction with the space, furniture placement, ritual decorative elements, lighting, and façade quality—were recorded and analyzed. Data analysis was conducted using the synomorphy framework. The quality of physical–behavioral interaction was assessed through indicators such as façade potential, furniture arrangement, spatial invitation, visual order, and sensory perception. Quantitative data related to population density, types of activities, and the percentage of behavioral occurrences were also tabulated and compared between ritual and ordinary conditions.
Findings: The findings indicate that during ritual occasions, particularly Christmas, behaviors and patterns of spatial use in the Jolfa neighborhood undergo a significant transformation. During this period, population presence increases noticeably, and social interactions become more diverse. Behaviors such as strolling, photography, family presence, shopping at local stores, and participation in ritual events become more prevalent. Specific festive decorations, such as Christmas trees, colorful lighting, ritual symbols, and the presence of street performers, enhance visual attractiveness and consequently strengthen the sense of place attachment. In contrast, on ordinary days, behaviors are predominantly transient or individual in nature, and the space is less frequently used for social interactions or the expression of creative behaviors. Observations also indicated that the arrangement of urban furniture, the quality of façades, the location of historical and cultural elements, and the presence of ritual symbols play an important role in shaping individuals’ behavior. For example, in Khachatur Square, the presence of decorative elements encouraged gathering, pausing, and photography, whereas under ordinary conditions, the same space primarily served a transitional function. In some areas, the lack of appropriate urban furniture reduced social interactions, while some existing furniture, due to its inappropriate form and orientation, reinforced social disengagement. Conversely, façades with high permeability and attractive architectural details were more likely to encourage participatory behaviors such as sitting, conversing, and shopping. Furthermore, the data recorded in the comparative table showed that the occurrence of collective behaviors, such as photography, eating and drinking, and group sitting, increased by 60% to 80% during the ritual period. Behaviors such as street vending and street music also occurred more frequently.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that ritual events can play a significant role in strengthening physical–behavioral congruence (synomorphy) in urban environments. By creating vibrant spaces, fostering human interactions, and strengthening the sense of place attachment, these events contribute to greater spatial vitality, behavioral diversity, and increased environmental efficiency. Built environments can be effective when they are capable of adapting to the cultural, social, and behavioral needs of their users, and ritual events provide an opportunity to test and strengthen this adaptability. To enhance synomorphic patterns during other periods as well, strategies such as designing flexible urban furniture, using appropriate colors and lighting, strategically positioning cultural symbols, and creating temporary communal spaces, such as local markets or small festivals, are recommended. Furthermore, incorporating seasonal patterns into urban design based on ritual events or climatic conditions can encourage more desirable behaviors. The environment should be designed in a way that accommodates collective and individual, social and privacy-seeking, formal and spontaneous behaviors. The analyses conducted in this study indicate that the theory of synomorphy, particularly in distinctive cultural contexts such as Jolfa, has considerable potential for evaluating and enhancing the quality of public spaces and can be applied to sustainable urban development.
